How does the Gospel of John Compare/Differ to the Gospel of Matthew?

I am reading the bible for the first time. I just finished reading Matthew, and now am starting on John (I have read Luke, and Mark as well).... I am sensing a difference but cant quiet put my finger on it... is one a story and the other more laws? or what is it?..... thanks
